This coin shows a laureate portrait of Louis, with the inscription "NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR". The engravers name BARRE below the head.

The reverse design consists of an ornate shield with the value "20 FR" at the sides. Around the outside above the wreath is the inscription "EMPIRE FRANCAIS", and the date is below the shield. The mintmark "A" appears to the left of the date. The edge is inscribed in raised lettering "DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE".

Coins of this type were issued from 1861 to 1870 inclusive. The photos are of the actual coin. There is some light glare on the face on the edge of the forehead, eye, nose lip and goatee (these are not flaws just brightness from the light) in the Napolean III face image. Coin is 90% pure gold see specs below. This collectible coin is in pristine condition and very rare.
