This is a genuine, US one dollar gold coin, minted in Philadelphia, PA, in 1862. This coin has a filled hole at about the 12 o'clock position on the obverse. It has also been cleaned.
Because of the condition of this item, I will not try to assign a grade, but will let you be the judge. In 1862, the first battle between iron clad warships occurred, off Hampton Roads, VA.
The Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) was fought, along with the Battle of Shiloh (Pittsburgh Landing). The Emancipation Proclamation was announced. This is a historic coin, minted during a time of great national crisis. It would be a good addition to a collection.
